Unlike cheap plastic two channel toys, hobby grade electric helicopters will need at least a basic tool kit.
There are lots of reasons for this. You may need to repair or modify your craft. Even if you’re one of those people who never crash their RC helicopters, you will certainly need to “tweak” the rotor settings from time to time.
Perhaps you started with the most basic of electric helicopters, and now want to upgrade. Rather than buy a whole new chopper, you can buy an upgrade kit for your old one. This can be anything from carbon fibre blades to a whole new motor.
RC helicopters often come with a basic tool kit, but if not then you will need to build your own. If you have bought a precision electronic model, you will thus need precision tools - electrical and watchmakers. So, if the ones that came with your RTF are the cheap plastic variety - throw them away and start afresh.
The best place to go for quality tools is one that sells radio control helicopters, for obvious reasons. Here, you can also get spare screws – it’s essential to have plenty of these.
At the very least, your start-up tool-kit must contain a set of precision screwdrivers, a hexagon spanner, and some pinch-nose pliers. You will also need some oil – precision grade, not motor!
A pair of tweezers is useful, as is a pack of cable ties. You will also need electrical tape and maybe some blu-tac for weight balancing etc. A couple of clean, lint free cloths are a must, and some people like to have a pack of baby wipes for oil spills.
This is only a very basic kit, but it will sort out most minor repairs and emergencies.
