Is flying radio controlled helicopters an expensive hobby?

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

There’s a certain degree of expense with every hobby, whether it’s dancing, crafts, collecting something or playing with radio controlled models. RC helicopters are no exception, but they’re not as expensive as you may think.

For example, you could buy a small micro radio control helicopter very cheaply, for less than the cost of a night out, and it’ll last you a lot longer. Micro helicopters are not only cheap, they’re easy to use. Because electrical RC helicopters are so light they can be flown without any prior experience and are very forgiving on accidents. For example, if you happen to crash your mini RC helicopter in the wall or the floor, it should survive intact and be able to take off straight away.

The same sadly couldn’t be said for one of the larger, more expensive RC helicopters. This is why it’s a good idea to begin your RC helicopter life by flying one of the smaller helicopters as you’ll learn the art of controlling a radio controlled helicopter without incurring any expensive problems through mistakes.

So, just like any hobby you can spend a lot of money with RC helicopters if you really get into the hobby, but initially the expense can be very low, less than £30 in some cases.

Where’s the best place to fly a radio controlled helicopter?

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

When you own a mini radio controlled helicopter you’re able to fly the toy pretty much anywhere. As they’re so small, quiet and electrical you can fly them inside, outside, in the office, in the bedroom and even around your kitchen. There’s no limit to where you can fly a mini radio controlled helicopter (though we’d advise you don’t fly them in a job interview).

Larger RC helicopters however are a little different, and can’t be flown in confined spaces, or indoors. So the question is, where’s the best place to fly radio controlled helicopters?

Some people like to fly their RC helicopters in the park, as this offers plenty of open space. However doing this in a public place can be dangerous as children are often playing, and if you have any accidents you could be liable.

A better place to fly a radio controlled helicopter is in an empty farmer’s field. You have plenty of open space, there shouldn’t be any people around and you’re able to land the RC model without any trouble.

It’s worth asking permission from the farmer first though, and always make sure that the field is empty!

What does a radio controlled model show entail?

Monday, January 19th, 2009

If you’re interested in radio controlled models and maybe buying an RC car, plane or helicopter, but you’re not sure what to go for, you could try attending one of the many radio controlled shows held every year throughout the country. Radio controlled shows and fairs give you a chance to chat with RC enthusiasts to find out exactly what owning an RC car, helicopter or plane is all about.

When you attend a radio controlled show you’ll see races between cars and even be able to enter the races yourself if you have your own RC car. You’ll find stalls with the latest radio controlled models on offer and even spare parts for the inevitable crash that you’ll have.

When you attend a radio controlled show that features planes and helicopters you’ll witness some great flying as the owners demonstrate just what their flying machines can do. You might even get some advice on flying, if you’re a little unsure of whether you can do it yourself. Who knows, maybe someone will let you have a go so you can see for certain whether a radio controlled plane or RC helicopter is for you.

Radio controlled helicopters, a toy with a club

Sunday, January 18th, 2009

There are many toys and gadgets available on the market that are a lot of fun to play with and can be very amusing whether on your own or with friends. However, there aren’t too many types of toys that have their own social aspect built in, where you can meet others interested in the same thing and make new friends.

Toys with their own social element include Hornby train sets, which have collector’s clubs, Transformers, which have their own conventions held annually, and radio controlled models such as cars, planes and helicopters. Radio controlled clubs exist all over the UK and you can meet up with others to swap tips, secrets and ideas. You can trade spare parts and advice and even have races against other people.

As well as clubs for radio controlled models, there are even special radio controlled days held throughout the UK, where visitors attend to watch displays of radio controlled helicopters, races involving cars, and even to enter the world of RC models themselves.

Radio controlled toys aren’t just a great way to find entertainment; they’re a way into a new world of friends and activities.

RC helicopters, the ultimate office toy

Saturday, January 17th, 2009

It’s important when you work in an office to keep your stress levels down. You can do this in a number of ways, such as regularly gossiping about inter-office relationships, playing games, chatting about the previous night’s television or even playing with some office stress relieving toys.

Office toys come in a variety of different styles, and it’s big business. Toys and gadgets for the office include golf putters, desktop pool tables, racing games, stress balls and a whole host of USB related gadgets.

One of the best office gadgets however is the mini RC helicopter.

Mini electric RC helicopters are great to play with in the office because they can be charged in a matter of minutes and are very quiet when they fly. The quiet aspect is important because you don’t want a loud helicopter buzzing around the office when you’re trying to avoid your boss finding out.

The mini RC helicopter is also tiny (hence its name) which means you can take off and land from your desktop, or even from the top of your PC.

If you find your stress levels rising in the office with targets getting bigger and bosses becoming less understanding, try doing a few laps of the office with a radio controlled helicopter. You’ll be surprised how much better you’ll feel for it.

Fly a radio controlled helicopter and learn

Friday, January 16th, 2009

There aren’t many hobbies and toys that children can play with that help them learn and develop in life, at least not in today’s world of video games and plastic figures. Video games are a lot of fun and children can spend hours perfecting their skills with them, but the skills they learn playing games like Grand Theft Auto won’t help them in later life.

Playing with more hands on toys such as radio controlled models however provide a much better learning experience for children. When you play with a radio controlled model you have to carefully follow the instructions to assemble the model first, which teaches you engineering and manufacturing. Then you’re learning artistic skills when you come to paint the model, and apply the decals. Finally when you come to use the model you’re learning driving or piloting, depending on whether you’re driving a radio controlled car or flying a radio controlled plane or helicopter.

Playing with radio controlled models is a much more educational way to spend your free time than playing with video games or other recreational activities. The skills you learn from RC models can actually benefit you in later life!

Voice controlled radio control helicopter on the way!

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

If using your hands to control a convention radio controlled transmitter seems too much like hard work, and just too ‘old hat’, the clever Japanese have come up with a solution. A new RC helicopter from Taiyo Corp, who are based in Tokyo, Japan, have invented a voice activated radio controlled helicopter.

It almost puts you in mind of Clint Eastwood in Firefox doesn’t it? Though rather than having to ‘think in Russian’, or even speak in Japanese, the new voice activated RC helicopter will work when you bark orders at it using English. Taiyo Corp are planning on releasing the voice activated radio controlled helicopter in March, at a rough price of just £40.

The rest of world, including Europe, will be getting the voice controlled radio controlled helicopter soon after.

Rather that using a handset to control the chopper, the operative has to wear a special headset with a microphone (making you look rather like a call centre operative) and you can use five different commands to control the flight. The commands include ‘up’, ‘down’, ‘hold’, ‘stop’ and of course ‘start engine’.

If you’re feeling froggy you can even use a regular transmitter to control the helicopter.

What do you need to do to set up a mini RC helicopter?

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

When you bought a radio controlled helicopter some years ago you would to perform a huge amount of work before being able to fly it. The construction of the helicopter, the assembly of the engine, the tests; all of this would need to be meticulously done if you wanted to avoid a nasty crash or an unfortunate accident on your maiden voyage.

With the new breed of electrical radio controlled helicopters however, all of the difficult set up procedures and pre-flight checks more associated with professional pilots flying real helicopters are no longer required. With a RC helicopter, particularly the 3 CH Mini Helicopters, you don’t need to do any of this difficult setup work, you can begin flying with very little effort.

Once you have your Mini RC Helicopter and you have charged the AA batteries, you need to ‘trim’ the radio controlled helicopter. This doesn’t involve scissors! Instead it means to adjust the trim of the helicopter so that the helicopter doesn’t lean to one side or the other. The idea is to trim the stabilizers so that the helicopter balances in the air, and thus you are able to fly your radio controlled helicopter straight.

Which radio controlled toy is perfect for you?

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

Radio controlled toys are a lot of fun to play with as they get you outside, they’re fast and if you have a friend to race with, they also satisfy that competitive streak. Before you decide on a radio controlled model though, you have to work out which type of model is best for you, whether that’s a car, a plane, a helicopter or a boat.

Here are a few things that might help you decide which is best for you.

Radio controlled boats
RC boats aren’t as fast as any of the other types of models, and they also require that you have a boating lake, canal or calm area of water near your home. They’re also not advisable for younger children unless they’re going to be supervised while playing as water can be dangerous.

Radio controlled cars
These are often the cheapest types of RC models, and the easiest to use. They don’t require any special areas to play on as you can use them indoors. The larger, faster radio controlled cars do require an open area, such as a field or park; though if you have a 4×4 RC truck you can play off road on uneven ground, and this can be much more fun.

RC planes
Planes can be difficult to control and require a decent sized runway to launch, plus you need some RC expertise to fly them.

Radio controlled helicopters
RC helicopters are the perfect mix of the ease of a radio controlled car combined with the excitement of a radio controlled plane. RC helicopters can be flown without any experience, even indoors, and are fun to fly because you can soar up and down, instead of just driving on the ground.

Whichever toy sounds like it’s perfect for you, you’re sure to have fun with it!

Radio controlled models are educational toys

Monday, January 12th, 2009

Playing with toys is a vital part of any child’s development, and ensuring that your children have the best educational toys to play with is a vital role for any parent. Some toys don’t help your children’s development, some help it more than others, and some are crucial to learning skills used in later life.

Just as playing with shapes and colours is important for babies, playing with toys that provoke the interest and spark the curiosity is important for older children. Years ago, toys such as Mechano were great for kids as they taught engineering skills, problem solving and design ability, which proved essential for children developing at the time. Today you can help your children to develop with even more technologically advanced toys that Mechano. Radio controlled toys help your children to learn about coordination when it comes to driving radio controlled cars, or flying radio controlled helicopters. They also teach electrical and engineering skills when it comes to building the radio controlled models.

You can help your children develop a lot more by introducing them to the world of radio controlled models instead of buying them that new Pokémon game or DVD.
