Getting started in RC

Choose the type of model that suits where you'll use it, learn the UK rules, practise on a simulator and, if you're flying, find a club. These four guides cover each step.

Your first steps

  1. Choose a type of model. Cars, planes and helicopters each have their own appeal and learning curve. Choosing your first RC model compares them side by side.
  2. Learn the rules. Since January 2026, flying any model aircraft of 100g or more outdoors needs a free CAA Flyer ID. UK rules for RC models explains what applies to you.
  3. Practise for free. RC flight simulators let you learn to fly without breaking anything.
  4. Find a club. Instructors, insurance and a safe place to fly or drive: see joining an RC club.

Then dive in

Once you've chosen, head to the guides for RC helicopters, RC planes or RC cars. Whichever you choose, read LiPo battery safety before your first charge, and keep the RC glossary handy for the jargon.
