A good RC car for a child is slow enough to control, tough enough to survive kerbs and fences, and repairable when something does break.
How these picks were chosen. Based on specification, manufacturer age ratings, UK parts availability and owner reports, not hands-on testing of every model. Prices from UK retailers, October 2026.

Arrma Typhon Grom. A small 4WD buggy, ready to run, with hobby-grade parts available. Fast enough to be exciting in a garden without being dangerous. See Arrma.
Traxxas TRX-4M and Axial SCX24. Small scale crawlers. They're slow, which younger children love once they discover building obstacle courses, and they hardly ever break. See Traxxas.
Traxxas Rustler HD XL-5. For a keen older child, a proper 1/10 truck with waterproof electronics and a NiMH battery (which is more forgiving than LiPo for children).
What makes a car child-friendly
- Moderate speed. 15 to 25mph is plenty; look for a training or speed-limit mode.
- Waterproof electronics for wet grass and puddles.
- Tough, flexible plastics.
- NiMH batteries or careful adult supervision of LiPo charging.
- Spares available, so a broken arm doesn't end the fun.
Battery safety
Lithium batteries need careful charging. An adult should handle LiPo charging on a hard surface, never overnight, and retire any swollen pack. See LiPo battery safety and, for an alternative, NiMH vs LiPo.
Where children can drive
Gardens, driveways (away from the road), and parks where it's allowed and there's space. Keep away from people, pets and traffic. Many clubs welcome junior drivers. Scale matters for space: see RC car scales explained.
When to step up
Once a child can drive a small car well and wants more, a 1/10 brushed truck is the next step. See best RC cars for beginners.
Frequently asked questions
What age is suitable for a hobby-grade RC car?
Many manufacturers rate their hobby-grade cars 14+, but children from about 8 can enjoy small, slower models with an adult helping. Full-size 1/10 cars suit keen children from about 12 with supervision.
Are crawlers good for kids?
Very. They're slow, controllable and great fun on gardens and obstacle courses, and they rarely break.
Can I limit an RC car's speed for a child?
Many hobby-grade cars have a training mode or throttle limit on the transmitter or ESC. Check the manual.
