Best RC helicopters for beginners

Some links on this page go to retailers who may pay us a commission, at no extra cost to you. How RC Mods makes money
The best beginner helicopter depends on what you want it for. Someone who wants a realistic-looking helicopter to potter around the garden needs something very different from someone who has watched 3D videos and wants to do that.
How these picks were chosen. These recommendations are based on specification, manufacturer features, UK parts availability and owner reports, not on long-term testing of every model. Prices are from UK retailers in October 2026 and change often. RC Mods may earn a commission on some links in future; that never decides a pick.

The easiest start: stabilised scale and fixed pitch
RC ERA C138 Jet Ranger. A Bell 206 lookalike with a 6-axis gyro, altitude hold and one-key take-off and landing. It holds its height while you learn to steer, which removes the hardest part of the first few flights. The rest of the RC ERA range, including the BO105 and the larger twin-brushless MD500, works the same way.
Blade Revolution 90 FP. A small fixed pitch helicopter with SAFE self-levelling and optional altitude hold, from a brand with excellent UK spares. Good for indoor learning and a natural step into the rest of the Blade range.
These teach the basics: hovering, orientation and gentle forward flight. Our guide to how to hover an RC helicopter has the drills.
Learning collective pitch
Collective pitch helicopters can fly upside down and do aerobatics, but they're harder to learn. Coaxial vs fixed pitch vs collective pitch explains why.
Blade Nano S3. Tiny, light and cheap to crash, with stability, altitude-hold and agility modes plus Panic Recovery. The cheapest way to learn collective pitch for real. It comes as BNF (no transmitter): you need a Spektrum DSMX transmitter to fly it, or the RTF version, which includes one.
Blade Revolution 235 CP. The update of the popular 230 S. A 3S collective pitch helicopter with brushless motors, a SAFE beginner mode and Panic Recovery. Big enough to fly outside in light winds.
Goosky S1 New Edition. A small direct-drive helicopter with metal-gear servos and app tuning. Very capable, cheap to repair, and well stocked in the UK; see Goosky.
OMPHobby M1 V3 Pro. Similar size and performance to the S1, with built-in ExpressLRS and self-levelling and rescue modes. See OMPHobby.
What to buy with it
- Two or three extra batteries. Flights are short.
- A set of main blades, tail blades and a main gear. You will need them.
- A balance charger once you have more than one or two packs: see best LiPo chargers.
- Training gear (light crossed rods on the skids) for collective pitch models, which stops tip-overs during your first hovers.
What to avoid
- Toy coaxials as a "starter" for hobby flying. Fun, but the skills don't transfer.
- No-name helicopters with no UK parts.
- A 450 or bigger as your first collective pitch helicopter without an instructor.
- Infrared toys if you want to fly in daylight near windows or outside.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best RC helicopter for an adult beginner?
If you want something easy and realistic, an RC ERA scale helicopter. If you want to progress to aerobatics, start with a simulator and a Blade Nano S3 or Revolution 235 CP.
Is a coaxial helicopter a good first helicopter?
It's the easiest to hover and fine as a toy, but the skills don't carry over well to single-rotor helicopters and it can't fly outdoors.
Can a beginner learn on a collective pitch helicopter?
Yes, with self-levelling and rescue modes and some simulator practice first. Without those, most beginners crash a lot and give up.
